“Great Expectations” grew from an old National Geographic photograph taken in the 1950’s, which portrayed a group of stiff old men exercising on a Miami Beach boardwalk long before the South Beach deco revival.

The women you see above are clearly waiting for something, perhaps cherries from the Bowl of Life. One has thrown down her cooking spoon, another holds onto her pocketbook, no matter what’s going on. One woman has managed to catch a cherry in her mouth. Will she be the lucky one?
