Faith
Oil 36″ x 38″
On your left is my maternal grandmother, Mae Hickey, with her arm around the next door neighbor, Lena Campbell. They are in the backyard of 412 East 2nd Street in Brooklyn, which was Mae’s house.
It was pouring rain the day I needed to decide what the background of this painting would be. You see the results. As I worked on the figures of these two friends, the faces carried expressions that told me there was something a little malicious within Mae, whereas Lena was innocently oblivious.
With a brush in my one hand and an apple in the other, Mae tested Lena’s faith in her, a la William Tell.
