Flatbush
Oil 28″ x 26″
My father was one of a family of seven Irish Catholic kids who grew up in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. As a young man he enjoyed taking photos of his family in the backyard: many of my paintings come from those snaps, often taken at Easter or on Sundays when everyone was dolled up.
“Flatbush” was taken on the back porch of their house. On the left you have Bessie, in the middle is Rose, and on the right is Eileen. Flowers were plucked from a bush in the yard to adorn these sisters, and I added the grapes for rhythm and color.
